The preceding Table of Assay Office Letters and the following<br />

List of Plate are taken from a communicati<strong>on</strong> by the late Mr. J. H.<br />

Sanders<strong>on</strong> to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, published in<br />

Vol. IV of their "Transacti<strong>on</strong>s" in 1862, page 544, and <strong>plate</strong> xx,<br />

Vol. IV, and we have to acknowledge with thanks the kind permis-<br />

si<strong>on</strong> accorded to us by the Council to reprint any porti<strong>on</strong>s of the<br />

paper bearing up<strong>on</strong> the subject. Our indebtedness to the late Mr.<br />

J. H. Sanders<strong>on</strong> for his valuable assistance was duly acknowledged<br />

in the preface to our first editi<strong>on</strong> of 1863, which we have reprinted<br />

in this editi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

CYCLE L<br />

Most of the letters in this cycle are taken from the Minutes of<br />

the Goldsmiths' Corporati<strong>on</strong>, in many cases from an impressi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the actual punch given <strong>on</strong> the paper. Those from <strong>plate</strong> are :<br />

B. 1682-3. A Jug, the property of the late Lord Murray.<br />

There seems to have been another form of B. used this<br />

year, as <strong>on</strong> the 1682.<br />

Edinburgh inside, and dated 1698.<br />

W. 1701-2. New North Kirk Communi<strong>on</strong> Cups, "the gift of<br />

Mr. William Archibald," 1702.<br />

Y. 1703-4. New North Kirk Communi<strong>on</strong> Cups, "the gift of<br />

John Cunningham of Bandales," 1704.<br />
