HALL MARKS ON PLATE.<br />

1403. The four wardens of the Goldsmiths' Company were<br />

William Grantham, Salom<strong>on</strong> Oxeneye, Thomas Lenyde, Robert<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

1405. Thomas Atte Hay was a benevolent <strong>gold</strong>smith; he bequeathed<br />

the "Horn Tavern" in 1405, now known as " Andert<strong>on</strong>'s<br />

Hotel," Fleet Street, to the Goldsmiths' Company, for the better<br />

support and sustentati<strong>on</strong> of the infirm members of the Company.<br />

The estimated value of his bequest was formerly 760 per annum.<br />

1409. -William- Chicheley, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was Sheriff in this year.<br />

141 5. William Fitzhugh, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was Comptroller of the<br />

Mint from 1400 down to 141 8.<br />

Solom<strong>on</strong> Oxney was <strong>on</strong>e of the Members of Parliament<br />

for the City in 1419.<br />

Brandeberg, <strong>gold</strong>smith, Engraver to the<br />

1422. Bartholomew Seman, <strong>gold</strong>-beater, usually called "Bartholomew<br />

Goldbeter," was Master of the King's Mints, tenth of<br />

Henry V, and first and sec<strong>on</strong>d Henry VI, within the Tower of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong><br />

and the town of Calais. He died in 1430, and was buried in<br />

the Church of St. John Zachary.<br />

1422. In first Henry VI, Johjt B ernes, of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, <strong>gold</strong>smith,<br />

was appointed by the King to make the m<strong>on</strong>ey weights for the noble,<br />

the half and quarter, and to stamp them, according to the form of<br />

the statute of the ninth year of the late King.<br />

1429. William Russe, <strong>gold</strong>smith, Sheriff, 1429, Master of the<br />

Mints of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, Calais, Bristol and York, tenth and eleventh<br />

Henry VI (143 1-2), and Warden of the Exchange, tenth Henry VI.<br />

(Stow spells his name Rous.) He was buried in St. Peter's Church,<br />

in Chepe.<br />

1432.^ -John Oreivell, <strong>gold</strong>smith, Engraver to the Mint, 1432-40.<br />

1437. .... Rem<strong>on</strong>de, a <strong>gold</strong>smith. In the privy purse expenses<br />

of Henry VII (1437): "Item delivered by your said com-<br />

of Gloucestre a nouche<br />

mandment to send that same day to my Lady<br />

maad in manner of a man, garnized with a faire gret balay, v gret<br />

perles, i gret diamand pointed, with three gret hangers garnized with<br />

rubies and perles, bought of Rem<strong>on</strong>de, the <strong>gold</strong>smyth, for the some<br />

of xi ur<br />

1439. William Austin, of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>. Flaxman, speaking of<br />

the m<strong>on</strong>ument of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, at Warwick,<br />

describes the figures as being natural and graceful, the architecture<br />

rich and delicate, and that they are excelled by nothing d<strong>on</strong>e<br />

in Italy of the same kind at this time, although D<strong>on</strong>atello and<br />

Ghiberti were living when this tomb was erected in 1439. He<br />

" says,<br />

The artist was William Austin, of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>." We insert his name<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g the <strong>gold</strong>smiths, although we have no positive record that<br />

he was actually a worker in the precious metals; but the arts were<br />

so nearly allied, the sculptor having so frequently received instructi<strong>on</strong><br />

in the workshop of the <strong>gold</strong>smith, as in the case of Ghiberti, to<br />

whom we have just alluded, that we may be excused in thus recording<br />

his name in the list as an English artist and <strong>gold</strong>smith.
