The arms of the burgh of Elgin are : A bishop standing, holding
in his dexter hand an open book^ and in his sinister a bishop's
crosier.
The assay towns of Aberdeen, Inverness and Banff in the adjoining
counties adopted abbreviations of their names, usually the
nrst two or three and the last letters, thus: ABDN, INS, and BA;
hence, on the same principle, Elgin used ELN .
