PREFACE TO SIXTH EDITION. xi<br />

supplying us with careful drawings of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g>, taken by their<br />

artist from all pieces of ancient <strong>plate</strong> which have come under their<br />

notice for the last twenty years.<br />

The reader will also perceive how<br />

m.uch wc are indebted to the assistance of the Right H<strong>on</strong>. the Earl<br />

of Breadalbane in allowmg us to copy the <str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> examples of<br />

<strong>plate</strong> collected by his Lordship in illustrati<strong>on</strong> of those of the Royal<br />

Burghs of Scotland, which have hitherto been involved in mystery.<br />

Our thanks are also due to [the late] Mr. W. J. Cripps for permis-<br />

si<strong>on</strong> to make some important additi<strong>on</strong>s and correcti<strong>on</strong>s in several of<br />

our Tables of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> and provincial date letters c<strong>on</strong>tained in his<br />

interesting work, entitled "Old English Plate"; and to the same<br />

gentleman for permitting us to print certain other matter, including<br />

some authorities given by Mr. J. H. Sanders<strong>on</strong> for the Tables of<br />

Edinburgh <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> Marks, which originally appeared in the Trans-<br />

acti<strong>on</strong>s of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. These tables<br />

have appeared in our previous editi<strong>on</strong>s, and we rendered our thanks<br />

to Mr. J. H. Sanders<strong>on</strong> in the Preface to the first editi<strong>on</strong> of 1863,<br />

but the property in Mr. Sanders<strong>on</strong>'s work and notes passed to [the<br />

late] Mr. Cripps.<br />
