and also <strong>on</strong>e great cor<strong>on</strong>al of <strong>silver</strong> to set wax candles up<strong>on</strong> in the<br />

said church."<br />

1255. William of Glouceste/, "the King's Goldsmith," was<br />

Keeper of the Dies, Master of the Mint in 1258. In the forty-first<br />

Henry III (1256) "This King, as a further ornament for St. Peter's<br />

(Westminster Abbey), ordered a sumptuous m<strong>on</strong>ument to be erected<br />

there, for his daughter Catharine, deceased, giving order to his treasurer<br />

and his chamberlain of the treasury to deliver to Sim<strong>on</strong> de<br />

Welles, five <str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g> and a half for his expenses in going to L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong><br />

for a certain brass image to be set up<strong>on</strong> her tomb, and returning<br />

home again. And up<strong>on</strong> the same tomb there was also set a <strong>silver</strong><br />

image; for the making of which William of Gloucester, the King's<br />

<strong>gold</strong>smith, was paid sixty and ten <str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g>."<br />

1262. In this year there was a quarrel between the <strong>gold</strong>smiths<br />

and the tailors, who met in great bodies, fully armed, with loss <strong>on</strong><br />

both sides. The riot was quelled by the Mayor and Aldermen, and<br />

thirteen of the ringleaders executed.<br />

1269. Am<strong>on</strong>g the fifty-eight adherents of Sim<strong>on</strong> de M<strong>on</strong>tfort,<br />

who was defeated and slain at the battle of Evesham, when<br />

Henry III was released from pris<strong>on</strong>, were C<strong>on</strong>rad, the ;<br />

<strong>gold</strong>smith<br />

John Fitzpatnck, <strong>gold</strong>smith ; and Hubert, the : <strong>gold</strong>smith they were<br />

banished the kingdom<br />

with the rest. On the submissi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

Bar<strong>on</strong>s, they were heavily fi.ned, and the City of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> was obliged<br />

1275.' Ralph le Blount, or Le Blund, <strong>gold</strong>smith, and <strong>on</strong>e of<br />

the wardens of the Company, was Alderman of Bassishaw Ward.<br />

He was Engraver to the Mint in 1267, having succeeded Richard<br />

Abel in that capacity.<br />

In 1275. -Michael Thovy, <strong>gold</strong>smith, for holding with the<br />

Bar<strong>on</strong>s, was impris<strong>on</strong>ed with others, and, by reas<strong>on</strong> of murders and<br />

robberies imputed to him by the Aldermen, was hanged in 1275.<br />

1275. Gregory de Rokesley, b. celebrated <strong>gold</strong>smith, lived in<br />

the Old Change; he was Keeper of the King's Exchange and Chief<br />

Assay Master of all the King's mints in England. Sheriff in 1271.<br />

He was eight times Mayor, between 1275 and 1285, when, for re-<br />

fusing to appear at the Tower as Lord Mayor before the King's<br />

Domesday, under the appellati<strong>on</strong> of " Aurifaber." One of these. Otto .Anrifaber,<br />

held in Essex ; and his descendants, under the siuname of Fitz Otho.<br />

appear to have been almost hereditary Mint Masters to the Crown for two<br />

centuries, becoming extinct about 1300.
