2. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mark, being the arms of the city, a tree, fish and<br />

3. The Thistle, has been used as an additi<strong>on</strong>al opti<strong>on</strong>al mark <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>gold</strong> of eighteen and twenty-two carats, and <strong>on</strong> <strong>silver</strong>.<br />

4. The Maker's Mark, viz., his initials.<br />

5. The Date Mark, or variable letter, changed <strong>on</strong> July i in every<br />

year.<br />

6. The Duty Mark of the sovereign's head. Abolished 1890.<br />

For <strong>gold</strong> of twenty-two and eighteen carats the figures 22 or 18<br />

arc added, and for <strong>silver</strong> of the New Standard Britannia is added.<br />

The Scottish Act of 6 and 9 Wm. IV (1836-7) in some respects<br />

extended to Glasgow, although it is generally regulated by the 59<br />

of George III; but they have not adopted the <str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g> prescribed by<br />

this statute of 1836, and c<strong>on</strong>tinue those previously in use. The <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

difference, however, is that the li<strong>on</strong> rampant takes the place of the<br />

thistle.<br />

The lower <strong>gold</strong> standards of fifteen, twelve and nine carats<br />

bears the <str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g> of .025, 15 ; .5, 12; and .375, 9, respectively, together<br />

v.-ith the tree, fish and bell, and the date letter.<br />
