crown mark up<strong>on</strong> them, that the public should imagine they were of<br />

a higher quality than they really were. Evidence before the Parlia-<br />

A.D. 1854. 17 & 18 Victoria, c. 82, s. 24. Foreign <strong>plate</strong> of an<br />

ornamental character made before the year 1800 is exempt.<br />

WEDDING RINGS.<br />

A.D. 1855. 18 & 19 Victoria, c. 60. This Statute recites the Act<br />

of 18 Victoria, c. 96, authorising the lower standard for <strong>gold</strong> wares,<br />

whereby it was enacted that <strong>gold</strong> wares not then previously liable to<br />

be assayed and marked, should be assayed and marked as therein<br />

menti<strong>on</strong>ed, and that rings were exempt ; and that it is expedient that<br />

<strong>gold</strong> wedding rings should be assayed and marked.<br />

Sect. I Enacts that <strong>gold</strong> wedding rings should be assayed and<br />

marked, in like manner as other <strong>gold</strong> <strong>plate</strong>; and that the provisi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of the statutes relating to the manufacture or sale of <strong>gold</strong> <strong>plate</strong><br />

should apply to <strong>gold</strong> wedding rings.<br />

Sect. 2. This repeals Sect. 3 of the Act of 17 & 18 Victoria, c. 96.<br />

Sect. 3. This secti<strong>on</strong> authorises certain companies to assay and<br />

mark <strong>gold</strong> wares, and collect the duties <strong>on</strong> the same.<br />

Secti<strong>on</strong>s 2 and 3 REPEALED.<br />

Islote. Gold wedding rings must not be sold without being duly<br />

assayed and marked. They can be made of any of the authorised<br />

standards, and are liable to the duty of 17s. per oz., of whatever<br />

standard they are.<br />

DRAWBACK BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND.<br />

A.D. 1866 29 & 30 Victoria, c. 64, s. 15, provides for allowing<br />

drawback <strong>on</strong> <strong>plate</strong> made in Great Britain exported from Ireland,<br />

and <strong>on</strong> Irish <strong>plate</strong> exported from Great Britain.<br />

ANNUAL LICENCES.<br />

A.D. 1867. 30 & 31 Victoria, c. 90,<br />

s. i. Annual Licences are<br />

to be taken out by every dealer in <strong>gold</strong> and <strong>silver</strong> articles in respect<br />

of any shop, and by every hawker or pedlar.*<br />

If <strong>gold</strong> is above 2 dwts. and under 2 oz., or if<br />

<strong>silver</strong> is above 5 dwts. and under 30 oz., at . ^,"2 6 o<br />

If <strong>gold</strong> is 2 oz. or more, or <strong>silver</strong> 30 oz. or<br />

Every pawnbroker taking in <strong>gold</strong> or <strong>silver</strong>, in<br />

*** No licence required for dealing in <strong>gold</strong> or <strong>silver</strong> wire, or<br />

thread lace. PARTLY REPEALED.<br />

* A penalty of 50 is imposed for dealing without licence.
