HALL MARKS ON PLATE.<br />

"Burke's General Armoury" gives the arms of the town, as at<br />

present used : Azure, <strong>on</strong> a mount, a castle triple towered without<br />

windows argent, mas<strong>on</strong>ed sable, the gate closed gtdes, surroimded<br />

by four oak sprigs disposed in orle of the sec<strong>on</strong>d, the interstices of<br />

the field being semee of stars of six points each of the last, and motto<br />

as above.<br />

The <strong>on</strong>ly mark found <strong>on</strong> <strong>silver</strong> that can be assigned to this town<br />

is a castle triple towered in irregular shield.<br />

Stirling. On an obl<strong>on</strong>g Tobacco-Box engraved <strong>on</strong><br />

the cover with two coats of arms surmounted by a<br />

rSTGl I<br />

ducal cor<strong>on</strong>et. The town mark is a castle, triple<br />

towered, as described above, having<br />

beneath the<br />

letter S to distinguish it from a similar mark at<br />

Edinburgh. The maker's (?) mark, a mermaid<br />

and star, and his initials G B. Earl of Breadalbane.<br />

TAIN (ROSS-SHIRE).<br />

T^A T ATI (^'i\ Tain. On a pair of Toddy Ladles, date about<br />

i^oo.Earl of Breadalbane.<br />

UNCERTAIN SCOTTISH MARKS.<br />

Unknown. These three stamps are <strong>on</strong> the<br />

inside of a <strong>silver</strong> lid of a shell Snuff-Box.<br />

Date about 1800. In the possessi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

Earl of Breadalbane.<br />

Unknown. On a fiddle head Toddy Ladle,<br />

provincial mark of some town in Scotland.<br />

Made circa 18 10. Representing an otter or<br />

badger <strong>on</strong> a wheat ear (?) and the letters I.<br />

& G. H. Earl of Breadalbane.<br />

Unknown. On a seal top Spo<strong>on</strong>, of English<br />

or Scottish make, of the seventeenth century,<br />

the baluster end well finished. The<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ogram inside the bowl, the animal <strong>on</strong><br />

the back of the stem. Letters <strong>on</strong> the bottom,<br />

"^^.- Lady Dji Cane.<br />

1624.<br />

Uncertain. i^Query Edinburgh.) These four<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>marks</str<strong>on</strong>g> are <strong>on</strong> the bottom of a Mug with <strong>on</strong>e<br />

scroll handle, broad mouth, repousse pyriform<br />

ornament round the lower part. The<br />

small mark is that of the maker, the other<br />

two those of the Deac<strong>on</strong>, probably the same<br />

<strong>silver</strong>smith. Date about 1680. Messrs.<br />
