10 HALL MARKS ON PLATE.<br />

Nicholas de Segrave to Sir William de Swift, Clerk, <strong>on</strong> behalf of<br />

the Goldsmiths' Company, the witnesses are ] ohn de Grantham and<br />

Roger de Ely, Sheriffs of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, Henry de Lecheford, Alderman<br />

of the Ward (Aldersgate), Richard de Wyhall, Robert Box and<br />

Thomas de Lincoln, <strong>gold</strong>smiths. Dated May 19, 1323. Of this<br />

first erecti<strong>on</strong> of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> little is known. The sec<strong>on</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> is sup-<br />

posed to have been built by Sir Dru Barentine, in 1407.<br />

Lincoln, a <strong>gold</strong>smith in the reign of Richard II, 1381, probably<br />

Thomas de Lincoln, before-menti<strong>on</strong>ed, was summ<strong>on</strong>ed, with others,<br />

to give advice as to the best steps to be taken for the preservati<strong>on</strong><br />

of the coin in England, which had been exported to foreign coun-<br />

tries in large quantities.<br />

1323. Roger of Ely, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was Sheriff of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> during<br />

the mayoralty of Sir Nicholas Farmgd<strong>on</strong>. In 1323, the site of the<br />

first Goldsmiths' <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> was purchased. His name is appended as<br />

witness to the deed of sale before referred to.<br />

1 324-1404. William of Wykeham, c<strong>on</strong>secrated Bishop of Winchester<br />

in 1367, is said to have designed the celebrated Gothic crozier<br />

which he left by will, with other <strong>plate</strong>, to New College, Oxford, of<br />

v/hich he was the founder. His own image is in the volute, kneeling<br />

before the Virgin, which last has been removed since the change of<br />

religi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

His great and useful talents, especially his skill in architecture,<br />

appear to have recommended him to the favour of Edward III. He<br />

persuaded that m<strong>on</strong>arch to pull down a great part of Windsor Castle,<br />

and rebuild it from his plan, in that plain magnificence in which it<br />

now appears; and many other buildings were restored or rebuilt<br />

under his directi<strong>on</strong>s. He died <strong>on</strong> September 27, 1404.<br />

1326. Sir Richard Betane, or Britaine, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was Mayor<br />

in this year.<br />

1332. Henry de Gloucester, citizen and <strong>gold</strong>smith of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>.<br />

His will, originally in Latin, is given in Weever's " Funeral<br />

M<strong>on</strong>uments," page 421. He was buried at St. Helens, L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>. He<br />

bequeaths to his daughter, Elizabeth, vj shillings, being a nun in<br />

the said c<strong>on</strong>vent of St. Helen's, etc.<br />

1334. The four wardens of the Company were Thomas de<br />

Berkel'e, Richard L^<strong>on</strong>erye, John de Makenhened, Srm<strong>on</strong> de Berking.<br />

1337. -The four wardens of the : Company Thomas de Rokesley,<br />

Richard L<strong>on</strong>ereye, John de Kingest<strong>on</strong>, and another name<br />

illegible.<br />

1339. The four wardens of the : Comoany Nicholas de<br />

Walyngiuick, William D'Espagne, Robert de Shordich, jun., Nicholas<br />

de Farnd<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In 1339 three L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> <strong>gold</strong>smiths were retained for a year by<br />

the Chapter of St. Paul's in c<strong>on</strong>sequence of a bequest of <strong>gold</strong> and<br />

jewels to the shrine of St. Erkenwald.<br />

1340. The four wardens of the Company: Richard Denys,<br />

Robert de Shordich, sen., Robert le Marechal, John de Kyngesi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

1349. John Walpole, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was buried in Allhallows<br />

Church, Bread Street, 1349.
