HALL MARKS ON PLATE.<br />

1452. Sir Humphrey Hayford, <strong>gold</strong>smith, Comptroller to the<br />

Mint and King's Assay Master, 1452-9, Mayor in 1477-8; s<strong>on</strong> of<br />

Roger Hayford, of Stratford-le-Bow. He was buried in the church<br />

of St. Edm<strong>on</strong>d, Lombard Street.<br />

1455. William Wodeward, <strong>gold</strong>smith. Engraver to the Mint.<br />

1456. William Hede, <strong>gold</strong>smith, being liveryman of the Goldsmiths'<br />

Company, and his wife, both made complaint to the wardens<br />

of their apprentice, William Bowden, " who irreverently, shamefully,<br />

and of frowwinesse " had beaten his said mistress. His punishment,<br />

ordered by the wardens, was that he should be " had into the kechyn<br />

of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> and there stripped naked, and by the hand of his master<br />

beaten until such time as he raised blood up<strong>on</strong> his body, in likewise<br />

as he did up<strong>on</strong> his mistress, and that he should there be made to ask<br />

his master and mistress of grace and mercy, naked as he was betyn."<br />

1458. Edward Raivd<strong>on</strong>, a <strong>gold</strong>smith, circa 1458.<br />

1460. John Adys, civis et aurifaber, L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, qui cbiit ultimo<br />

die Februarii 1461. Buried in St. John Zachary's Church.<br />

1 1. 46 German Lynche, of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, <strong>gold</strong>smith, Warden of the<br />

Mint, was elected Graver of the Punche<strong>on</strong>s for life (1460-83); Master<br />

and Warden of the King's Mint in his realm of Ireland, within his<br />

castle of Dybeln (Dublin), and he was authorised to strike m<strong>on</strong>ey<br />

for currency in Ireland, and was to make all manner of punche<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

ir<strong>on</strong>s, gravers, etc., within the city of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, or elsewhere, as should<br />

to him seem most needful.<br />

1463. Thomas Muschamp, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was Sheriff in 1463, in<br />

the mayoralty of Sir Matthew Philip, and was buried in the Church<br />

of St. Mary Magdalen, Milk Street.<br />

1463-4. Sir Mathew Philip, <strong>gold</strong>smith. Mayor of L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> in<br />

1463-4, made Knight of the Bath by Edward IV with other aldermen,<br />

for bravery <strong>on</strong> the battlefield, <strong>on</strong> the occasi<strong>on</strong> of the routing<br />

of Falc<strong>on</strong>bridge and the Kentish rebels in their attempt to force the<br />

city. He was warden of the Company in 1474, and subscribed<br />

6s. 8d. towards St. Dunstan's feast, which altogether amounted to<br />

iS 5s- 2d.<br />

1465. ''Item, my master bout of Thomas Cartelage, <strong>gold</strong>smith,<br />

of Chepe, v chargers of sylver, xvj dysshes, and vij saussers, weyinge<br />

Ixix^* xix* vj*^, after iij* the unnce." (Expenses of Sir John<br />

Howard.)<br />

1465. "Item, the yeare aforesaid<br />

master bout of Umfrey the Goldsmythe, a chaffer of<br />

sylver weyinge xviij unces and a quarter, and my master payd hym<br />

therefor of old grotez i" and in new grotez ij^ vj* paid for every<br />

1474.<br />

Oliver Davy, <strong>gold</strong>smith, bequeathed to the Company, in<br />

trust, certain property, of the present estimated value of ;^36 8s. per<br />

annum, for poor pensi<strong>on</strong>ers.<br />

1478. Mylys Adys, <strong>gold</strong>smith, was warden of the Company in<br />

1478, successor of John Adys before menti<strong>on</strong>ed, who died in 1461.
