In American Psycho, Ellis makes similar choices to describe Bateman’s excesses of<br />

violence. For example, in the following scene unfolds after Bateman exchanges a couple<br />

of words with “an old queer” and his dog on a side-street while taking a walk:<br />

In one swift movement I pick the dog up quickly by the neck and<br />

hold it with my left arm … I’ve got such a tight grip on its throat it<br />

can’t bark and I can actually hear my hand crush its trachea. I<br />

push the serrated blade into its stomach and quickly slice open its<br />

hairless belly in a squirt of brown blood, its legs kicking and<br />

clawing at me, the blue and red intestines bulge out and I drop the<br />

dog onto the sidewalk … I whirl around on its owner [an old<br />

queer] and I push him back, hard, with a bloodied glove and start<br />

randomly stabbing him in the face and head, finally slashing his<br />

throat open in two brief motions; an arc of red-brown blood<br />

splatters the white BMW 320i parked at the curb, setting off its car<br />

alarm, four fountainlike bursts coming from below its chin. The<br />

spraylike sound of the blood. He falls to the sidewalk, shaking like<br />

mad, blood still pumping … (167)<br />

The majority of violent passages give the same attention to grizzly detail as in this next<br />

excerpt. After going out to dinner with Paul Owen, a fellow stockbroker who not only<br />

handles a very profitable account envied by many but who also mistakes Bateman for<br />

somebody else, the narrator invites him to his apartment to kill him:<br />

The ax hits him midsentence, straight in the face, its thick blade chopping<br />

sideways into his open mouth, shutting him up … There’s no blood at<br />

first, no sound either except from the newspapers under Paul’s kicking<br />

feet, rustling, tearing. Blood starts to slowly pour out of the sides of his<br />

mouth shortly after the first chop, and when I pull the ax out … and strike<br />

him again in the face, splitting it open, his arms flailing at nothing, blood<br />

sprays out in twin brownish geysers, staining my raincoat … (217)<br />

As the novel evolves, the protagonist is increasingly portrayed as a cold-blooded and<br />

brutal murderer who kills indiscriminately and on impulse. In the span of the novel, his<br />

list of victims include a vagrant or “bum” (131), a dog and its “queer” owner (167), a<br />

stockbroker (217), a number of different female “pick-ups” and prostitutes (245, 289-90,
