The 2007 reporting scope excludes sites belonging to the
Motors & Actuators business (sold in late 2005, but included in
environmental reporting for 2006), and the 20 sites of the Wiring
Harness business (sold in late 2007). It includes the six sites acquired
or built in 2006.
Presentation of indicators
Most indicators are expressed in terms of both quantity of products
consumed or emitted per million euros and total quantity. Quantity
per million euros is calculated by dividing the total quantity by the
total sales for the sites in question.
Figures for the current year are compared to those for the five
previous years, to reveal trends.
The extent to which indicators are representative is expressed by
dividing the sales from each site that responded by the total sales
figure of all the sites included in the report.
As in previous years, all responses from sites were validated by an
external body in order to ensure quality and representativeness.
The following sections give a point-by-point rundown on the
Valeo Group’s environmental performance in 2007, with regard
to Valeo’s automotive equipment business. For each point, we
outline Valeo’s strategy on product design and site management.
Charts with comments are included for an at-a-glance view of
Group performance and trends over the last five years. Details are
given on the resources implemented at Group and local levels. T ext
boxes outline forthcoming measures planned by Valeo under its
environment endeavor.

2.2 Energy consumption and global warming
Carbon dioxide (CO ) is one of six greenhouse gases that build up in

the atmosphere and cause global warming. Transport accounts for
around a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, with road
transport accounting for 18%. This figure is for vehicle usage alone,
and does not include emissions arising from energy consumed
in manufacturing the vehicles. With the population growth and
economic growth expected over the coming decades, sharp demand
for individual mobility will have to be balanced against increasing
scarcity of fossil fuels and the ever more pressing need to combat
global warming.
Valeo contributes in two ways: (i) by developing products and
technologies to reduce vehicle fuel consumption, and thereby
CO emissions; and (ii) by implementing cleaner, energy-saving

manufacturing processes at its production sites.

One expression of Valeo’s long-standing commitment to
environmental protection and the fight against global warming is
its deliberate choice to develop environment-friendly products and
systems. Taken together, recent Valeo innovations can reduce vehicle
fuel consumption, and thus CO emissions, by up to 40%.
