These results have been achieved through a number of major
specific measures taken by Product Family teams over the years:

eradication of lead in solder for electronic components;
upgrade of surface treatment processes, from chrome 6 to
chrome 3;
eradication of cadmium in pigments.
Eradication of hazardous substances at sites
As well as working on the eradication of hazardous substances
from products, Valeo has also abolished the use of all substances
considered hazardous at its industrial sites.
To this end, sites apply a procedure that involves identifying banned
substances, seeking replacement substances (at economically
acceptable conditions), testing them, and having them approved
by clients. In the case of residual hazardous substances at Valeo sites,
most products are either awaiting certification or the Group has been
unable to find replacement products at a viable cost.

In the years to come, Valeo will continue to extend the initial
scope of substances covered by the ELV directive to approach
the target of “zero heavy metals” in its products. This goal will
be pursued through sustained technological efforts by Product
Family R&D departments. 1

Use of chlorinated solvents and CMR substances has fallen
steadily since 2004, and 2007 performance showed a significant
improvement on 2006 with ratios per million euros of sales
down by 25% and 60% respectively. This illustrates effective
implementation of instructions, such as the requirement on
look-up in the data bank on banned and regulated products.
The number of listed chemicals has fallen at all sites, and limitations
have been set on the quantities of chemicals used.
In the years to come, Valeo will be continuing with measures
aimed at eradicating all hazardous substances from its
production sites. Sites will also be helping to inventory
substances covered by the REACH Regulation, and complying
with this regulation.
