Young Guy nods.
“Yeah, sure.”
Old Guy smiles.
“Sons of the Pioneers.”
Young Guy squeezes.
“OK.”
A smile spreads like a wet stain on Old Guy’s face.
“The Sons… Roy, back when he was Leonard, started ’em
out, along with Bob Nolan an’ Tim Spencer. That was in ’33.
Called themselves th’ Pioneer Trio. When they added Hugh an’
Karl Farr they became th’ Sons.”
Roy, his pain under control, is intrigued.
“What is that they do, that that. Yo-de yo-de stuff?”
Old Guy’s smile hardens.
“You mean yodelin’? It’s called yodelin’. You—you never
heard yodelin’ before?”
Roy is filled with regret that he must disappoint Old Guy
again.
“No, sir—but I like it. I like it a lot.”
“Well, that’s good. They were th’ first Western group to use
trio yodelin’. There was nobody like ’em. Never will be again.”
Roy is taking it all in.
“The Sons of the Pioneers, huh?”
Now he knows.
The secret wasn’t so big, after all.
Never mind he had to risk his life to find out.
Whoops. Old Guy is saying something.
“Sir?”
“I said—” Old Guy says, sounding like a peeved teacher
addressing a dull student “—what d’you know about your
namesake?”
“Namesake?”
“Roy.” He slows down the pace. “Rogers. Roy Rogers.
King’ve th’ Cowboys.”
Roy shrugs.
“Nothin.”
Old Guy seems bewildered by the news.
He crosses his legs, takes a deep breath, and begins.
