ROY’S PLAN IS SIMPLE,
almost of necessity.
He will bake a lasagna.
He will bake a lasagna, and leave it at door 28/RR. He will
place it, covered in aluminum foil, by the light that lives at the
bottom of that door, ready to pop into a microwave for heating,
except first you have to remove the foil. And he will also write
a note that he will leave on top of the foil-wrapped lasagna, and
that note will include his room number and his name and say
something nice about the guy’s music.
To Roy’s mind, this appears as perfect a plan as ever he has
hatched. Not that he has hatched that many plans in his life.
Roy’s natural predisposition is more comfortable with chance
than intentionality, or designed evolution; far be it from him to
impose his will upon the World.
There seems to be enough of that going on without his two
cents thrown in.
Nor has he troubled himself to consider that his plan
might backfire and be wrongly interpreted—i.e., as crafty
manipulation. Otherwise, he might reconsider. But Roy lives an
isolated life with himself as sole arbiter for his thoughts and deeds
and, according to his way of understanding things, how could
his gift be construed as anything other than a neighborly gesture,
and thus benign? So what if he happens to mention in his note
something about the guy’s music? He’s not complaining. He’s
complimenting. And people like to be complimented.
No. Roy is convinced this is the best course of action for him
to pursue.
His mind is made up.
