hardly noticeable details may be altered or omitted on these<br />

copies but clearly the artist did not contribute new symbols<br />

out <strong>of</strong> his own imagination.<br />

Finally, it may sound strange, but we discoverred that it<br />

is not possible to trust even the published photographs <strong>of</strong><br />

the Egyptian <strong>zodiacs</strong>. On Figure 2.41 we show details on two<br />

photographs <strong>of</strong> the Ramses VI zodiac. The first photograph<br />

was taken from [31], pages 128–129, and the second photo-<br />

graph was taken from [181], pages 162–165. Notice that these<br />

two pictures show different figures on the zodiac. In fact one<br />

<strong>of</strong> these photographs was clearly tampered with. Fortunately,<br />

these detailes were not crucial for the astronomical dating <strong>of</strong><br />

the Ramses VI zodiac (see section 8.5).<br />

2.5 Our Abbreviations for Egyptian<br />

Zodiacs<br />

Sometimes, it will be convenient for us to use short abbreviations<br />

when referring to the Egyptian <strong>zodiacs</strong> analyzed in this<br />

book. In particular, we will use these abbreviations to make<br />

clear at the first glance fragment <strong>of</strong> what zodiac is displayed<br />

in a figure. The following is the list <strong>of</strong> these abbreviations:<br />

DL – the Long Denderah zodiac (Fig. 2.8)<br />

DR – the Round Denderah zodiac (Fig. 2.6)<br />

EB – the Big Esna Zodiac (Fig. 2.15)<br />

EM – the Small Esna zodiac (Fig. 2.17–2.18)<br />

AV –<br />

the upper Athribis zodiac (Fig. 2.19, top<br />

one)
