2.29 How the STAAR assessments will impact student credit for courses and grades:
According to the state rules and legal policies for 2012-2013:
A student’s score on an EOC assessment is to be worth 15% of the student’s final grade
for that course.
A student is permitted to retake an EOC assessment for any reason at any of the scheduled
testing administrations, with the district determining whether to count the retake score as
15% of the final course grade.
A school district is not required to use the student’s score on subsequent administrations to
determine the student’s final grade for that course.
As allowed by the state, FWISD has made the following decisions regarding the use of a student’s EOC
scores:
I. Per FWISD LOCAL EIA policy,
The initial End-of-Course (EOC) assessment shall count for 15% of the student’s final grade
for the course as reported on the student’s transcript;
Each semester grade shall count as 42.5% of the student’s final grade, and the EOC score shall
count as 15% of the student’s final grade;
A student who does not earn a passing final grade but who passes the EOC will be
administered a credit-by-examination (CBE) to earn course credit.
A student who does not earn a passing final grade and who fails the EOC shall be required to
retake the course.
If a student retakes an EOC assessment, the District will use the retake score for credit
decisions only if the retake score allows a student to gain credit in the course.
The District shall also use the retake score to recalculate a student’s cumulative score.
The District shall not use the retake score in the final course grade calculation as reported on
the student’s transcript.
III. Weighted Numerical Grade Average Changes Beginning with Grade 9 Students Entering in
2011-2012. Board policy Revised EIC (LOCAL), January 13, 2012.
a. End-of-Course Assessment Scores
The District shall include scores from end-of-course (EOC) assessments in calculations for class
rank.
b. Weighted Grade System
Beginning with students entering grade 9 in the 2011-12 school year, the District shall
categorize and weight courses as Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III in accordance with provisions of this
policy.
