4.1 School Year [EB (LOCAL)]<br />

Section 4: Hours of School<br />

The school will be open to the public for the purpose of transacting routine business for the annual<br />

periods indicated below:<br />

I. Elementary division -- 220 days (open three [3] weeks and 4 days before school begins and 4<br />

weeks after school ends).<br />

II. Middle school division -- 220 days (open three [3] weeks and 4 days before school begins and<br />

4 weeks after school ends).<br />

III. High school division -- 12 months (a principal may choose to close school the first two [2]<br />

weeks in July with approval from the appropriate Learning Network Director).<br />

The principal will schedule the annual duty for the administrative staff of his or her school in such a<br />

manner that at least one (1) administrator is on duty each day the school is open. (See Board Policy<br />

DK{LOCAL}.)<br />

Summer hours for building level personnel will be 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily unless otherwise approved<br />

by the superintendent. (See Board Policy DK {LOCAL}.)<br />

The administrative in-service for principals shall be held the first full week the principals report for the<br />

school year<br />

4.2 School Day [EC (LOCAL)]<br />

The school day shall be scheduled so that students are provided the best opportunity for their<br />

development. The administration is encouraged to use flexibility in designing the daily<br />

schedule to meet the following considerations:<br />

I. The learning activities of each student are carefully guided and supervised.<br />

II. The cost of the system is not increased beyond an amount necessary to operate a fixed,<br />

uniformly scheduled school day.<br />

III. Parents and the general public are informed of the reasons for scheduled operational<br />

hours, and variations of the schedule that may exist.<br />

Subject to Board approval, the superintendent shall establish regular operational hours for<br />

District schools. Such hours need not be uniform between school or grade levels. Variations in<br />

the established operational hours of District schools shall be approved by the superintendent or<br />

designee.<br />

Kindergarten<br />

A District kindergarten program shall be administered on a full academic year, full-day basis.<br />
