to minors, as defined by the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act and as determined by<br />

the Superintendent or designee.<br />

The Superintendent or designee shall enforce the use of such filtering devices. Upon approval<br />

from the Superintendent or designee, an administrator, supervisor, or other authorized person may<br />

disable the filtering device for bona fide research or other lawful purpose.<br />

5.9.III Electronic Media Guidelines for Employees, Parents and Students<br />

A. Employees – Personal Use of Electronic Media<br />

Employees are responsible for their conduct even when they are not acting as a District<br />

employee.<br />

When communicating publicly regarding District matters, employees shall clearly state<br />

that they are expressing their personal viewpoint and not an official position of the District.<br />

An employee may not set up or update the employee’s personal social network page(s)<br />

using the District’s computers, network or equipment.<br />

An employee may not use the District logos or other copyrighted material for personal<br />

use without express, written consent.<br />

B. Employees, Parents and Students – Use of Electronic Media with Students<br />

Only certified or licensed employees may communicate with students through electronic<br />

media.<br />

Employees may only communicate with a student regarding matters that are within the<br />

scope of their professional responsibilities.<br />

Don’t ―friend‖ a student on social media sites. An employee may create a separate<br />

professional page using a social network site to communicate with students. For assistance<br />

in creating one, please contact the Communications Department at 817-814-1930.<br />

A District employee cannot communicate with a student between the hours of 10 p.m.<br />

and 6 a.m. unless there are emergency circumstances that warrant the communication.<br />

An employee does not have a right to privacy with respect to communication with students<br />

and parents.<br />

At any time a parent or student can submit a written request to a District employee to<br />

discontinue all forms for electronic communication, including e-mail, text messaging<br />

and phone calls.<br />

5.9.IV Monitored Use<br />

Electronic mail transmissions and other use of the electronic communications system by students<br />

and employees shall not be considered private. Designated District staff shall be authorized to<br />

monitor, and/or filter such communication at any time to ensure appropriate use.<br />

5.9.V Intellectual Property Rights<br />

Students shall retain all rights to work they create as part of instruction or using the<br />

District’s electronic communication system.<br />
