Previously Mined Area -----1. Any area that has been subject to surface or underground mining<br />

activity, 2. A grayfield.<br />

Principal Spillway -----The primary system used to dewater a sediment basin or dam at predetermined<br />

rates in a staged fashion.<br />

Proctor Curve -----Curve showing the relationship between the density <strong>and</strong> water content of soil for a<br />

given compaction.<br />

Profile -----A representation of an object or structure seen from the side along its length.<br />

Project Applicant -----A person who has filed or intends to file an application for a permit, approval, or<br />

authorization that DEP is authorized to issue under any of the environmental statutes that DEP<br />

implements.<br />

Project Name -----The name by which a project is or will be known.<br />

Project Site -----The entire area of activity, development, lease, or sale including:<br />

(i) The area of an earth disturbance activity.<br />

(ii) The area planned for an earth disturbance activity.<br />

(iii) Other areas that are not subject to an earth disturbance activity.<br />

Protective Lining -----Materials placed within a water conveyance or impoundment structure to prevent<br />

accelerated erosion.<br />

Public Comment Period -----The time allotted for citizens to express views <strong>and</strong> concerns regarding an<br />

action proposed by a government agency, such as rulemaking, issuing permits. Etc.<br />

Pump-around System -----A method of working within a watercourse wherein base flow is captured<br />

upstream of the work area <strong>and</strong> pumped to a suitable stabilized discharge point downstream of<br />

the work area.<br />

Pumped Water Filter Bag -----A bag manufactured from filter fabric <strong>and</strong> used to filter water pumped<br />

from a disturbed area prior to discharging it to Surface waters.<br />

Pumping Test -----A test that is conducted to determine aquifer or well characteristics, typically the<br />

change in hydraulic head while pumping over time.<br />

Pure Live Seed -----The product of the percentage of pure seed times the percentage of germination<br />

divided by 100. For example, [85% pure seed X 72% germination rate] 100 = 61% PLS.<br />

Purveyor -----Supplier.<br />

PVC -----Polyvinyl Chloride, which is a type of plastic commonly used in pipe <strong>and</strong> some geotextiles.<br />

PWRP -----PA Wetl<strong>and</strong> Replacement Project.<br />

Pyrite -----A yellowish mineral, iron disulfide, FeS2, generally metallic in appearance. Commonly<br />

referred to as fool’s gold..<br />

Q -----Symbol of quantity of flow, usually given in cfs.<br />

Quad Map -----Topographic map of a 7 ½ minute quadrangle published by the USGS.<br />

Quadrangle -----A 4-sided area, bounded by parallels of latitude <strong>and</strong> meridians of longitude used as an<br />

area unit of mapping, typically in 7 ½ minutes but sometimes in 15 or 30 minutes.<br />

Quicklime -----See lime.<br />

R, or r -----Symbol for hydraulic radius.<br />

Rainfall Duration -----The period of time during which rainfall occurs, exceeds a given intensity, or<br />

maintains a given intensity.<br />

Rainfall Frequency -----The frequency, usually expressed in years, at which a given rainfall intensity<br />

<strong>and</strong> duration can be expected to be equaled or exceeded.<br />

Rainfall Intensity -----In the Rational Equation, it is the rate of rainfall in inches per hour.<br />

Light Rain: < 0.10 in/hr.<br />

Moderate Rain: 0.11 to 0.30 in/hr.<br />

Heavy Rain: > 0.30 in/hr.<br />
