affected by HIV: <strong>in</strong> 2011 an estimated 20,200 African-born women were liv<strong>in</strong>g with HIV <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>UK</strong>. 157 (See Appendix: 24 for fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation)<br />

In spite of <strong>the</strong> advancement of Anti Retro Viral <strong>the</strong>rapy, which has greatly improved<br />

life expectancy, women liv<strong>in</strong>g with HIV <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> still face a huge burden of stigma and<br />

discrim<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g access<strong>in</strong>g <strong>health</strong>care services, 158 and are extremely vulnerable to<br />

gender-based violence. 159 (See General Recommendation 19)<br />

Recommendations:<br />

• Tra<strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>icians work<strong>in</strong>g with women who have suffered violence to be aware of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir clients’ HIV-risk status and engage <strong>in</strong> crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention<br />

• Integrate gender violence <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> national Sexual Health Programme 160<br />
