Analogies, tangencies and differences On the basis of the historical-comparative method and analysis of the sources, the aim is to examine issues relative to the analogies, relations of historical transmission and opposition, differences and possible convergences of the phenomena evoked in the title, in the common context of “mystical” cults. Maksutov, Moscow State University, Russia Orthodox Christianity and Contemporary Europe: traditions and transformations Throughout the 20 th century the Orthodox Church has been treated as the forgotten branch of Christianity. The political situation in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe meant that the study of religions was restricted and that students and scholars of religion were cut off from the study of religion in the West. In reverse the same could be said about the study of Eastern and Central European religion in the Western hemisphere. The developments of dogmatic, religious tenants, religious life, etc. were little studied and instead the focus was on the political suppression of religion and religious freedom. However religious life was not at a still stand. Religious thinking, religious life and study of religions were continued, although separated, and immigrants from Eastern and Central Europe continued their traditions in a new setting. But what is the status quo? How is religion studied today and how is it lived? How does the study of religions develop when many of the discussions of the relationship and borderlines between theology and religious studies did not reach Eastern Europe until after 1989? Should contemporary Eastern European studies in religion first and foremost catch up with the Western study of religion, should it basically continue the pre-revolutionary road – or is there a road in between? The panel is a contribution in further reflection on Orthodox Christianity and on its ways of representing or embodying tradition in Europe in the twenty-first century. 11.00 Ivar Kh.
