Curriculum Vitae
Jochem Tolsma was born in Kerkwijk, the Netherlands, on the 15th of December 1977. He obtained
his Master’s degree in Natural Sciences at the Radboud University Nijmegen in 2002. After this,
he worked for a brief period as a youth worker in Bos en Lommer, Amsterdam. He then decided to
study Social Cultural Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam and obtained his Master’s degree in
2004. In September 2004, he became a PhD student at the Interuniversity Center for Social Science
Theory and Methodology (ICS). He worked on his PhD thesis at the Department of Sociology of
the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Currently, he holds a position as Assistant
Professor at the Department of Sociology at Radboud University Nijmegen.
His fi elds of interest include ethnic hostility, ethnic educational differentials, criminology,
the infl uence of the local living environment on a wide array of outcomes (e.g. ethnic hostility,
residential sorting) and quantitative research methods. Among other things, he is currently aiming
to integrate (the causes and consequences of) implicit associations into the theoretical framework
of Ethnic Competition Theory.
