the feelings are blind—that the propensities<br />

must be<br />

guided by the intellect. And all perceptions of qual<br />

ities and fitness are referred to these intellectual facul<br />

ties.<br />

My<br />

consciousness assures me that here has been a<br />

great error, a double error, in making the so-called in<br />

tellectual faculties all passionless, and the so-called sen<br />

timents and propensities devoid of all intelligence. I<br />

believe in the intuitions of the heart, as they are called,<br />

which seem to me only to be the rapid and powerful<br />

action of the intelligence that resides in every passion<br />

of the soul. Each seems faculty to me to bo a combina<br />

tion of desire and intelligence, with powers of foresight<br />

and memory.<br />

I know that the reflective powers, comparison and<br />

causality, by<br />

which we discover the harmonies of rela<br />

tion and sequence, and the general "fitness of things,"'<br />

are the calm judges that must give final decision ; but<br />

what is called the instinctive knowledge of right seems<br />

of conscientiousness. So<br />

to me to be the intelligence<br />

constructiveness, or what is called the propensity to<br />

build or construct, seem3 to cany with it in insects,<br />

birds, and higher animals, as well as in man, certain<br />

powers of intelligence and action.<br />

In a word, I can conceive of no passion which is not<br />

accompanied by a kind of intelligence suited to its nature<br />

and objects, and us giving the knowledge called instinct<br />

ive or intuitive, and which, though liable to many per<br />

versions, is, in a true life, perhaps<br />

even more reliable<br />

than the action of the so-called intellectual powers.<br />

the function of amativeness a brain by itself, the cere-
