I can not omit here what is to me an evident fact, that<br />

there are diseases affecting vitality, higher or deeper<br />

than those we have just considered. There are causes<br />

affecting the health of the spirit and its hold upon the<br />

bodily organization, into which I seek in vain to pene<br />

trate. Strength comes to us from sources we know<br />

nothing or but vaguely about; and we are overwhelmed<br />

with weakness and despair, from similar occult influ<br />

ences. We see the spheres of being around and below<br />

us, or external to us, but we have only dim revealings<br />

of those which are above or internal. There are, how<br />

ever, multiplied evidences of their existence, in and<br />

out of our own interior consciousness. Of the nature<br />

of such diseases, or their causes, I am not yet able to<br />

speak. I can only say, generally, that as the best way<br />

to keep a healthy mind, is to give it a healthy body for<br />

its basis, so the best guarantee for spiritual health, is<br />

that of the combined animal and organic systems.<br />

CHAPTER XXIII.<br />

DISEASES OF THE GENERAL SYSTEM.<br />

I shall now endeavor to give such an account of<br />

diseases and treatment as the reader can perfectly un<br />

derstand, and may find practically useful. It is done<br />

with brevity, because I have already laid down the broad
