IMPREGNATION.<br />

The formation of the zoosperm, or seminal animal<br />

cule, in man, and the ovum in woman, belongs<br />

to the<br />

domain of organic life, yet all the highest powers of the<br />

soul, and the soul's organs, are engaged in the work.<br />

For there is to be more than a mere bodily organization<br />

formed— a mass of bone, muscle, and various tissues.<br />

First of all, there is to be generated<br />

an immortal soul.<br />

God, doubtless, made the first human souls ;<br />

but He<br />

made them with the power of generating all other souls,<br />

just as the first bodies have generated all other bodies.<br />

God created no souls but the first, and the parent of any<br />

child is the parent of his soul as much as of his body.<br />

In fact, it is the soul, so generated, which forms the body<br />

which, for some years, is to be its habitation, the medium<br />

of its perceptions, and the instrument of its expression.<br />

This generation<br />

of souls must be understood and ac<br />

cepted, before we can proceed one step in a true phi<br />

losophy of generation, or development, or progress. It<br />

is at the basis of all true science of the laws of heredi<br />

tary descent. If God had now a special manufactory<br />

of human souls, and they were furnished to order, and<br />

one was always ready whenever, over the whole earth,<br />

a human ovum chanced to be impregnated, how does it
