in effusion of pus, and the formation of adhesions; all<br />

dangerous.<br />

The general causes of these diseases are not differ<br />

ent from those of all the affections of these organs.<br />

Their exciting cause is commonly cold, especially fol<br />

lowing exhaustion.<br />

The treatment is absolute diet, cold sponging of the<br />

chest, the wet compress, and the wet-sheet pack. Al<br />

ternate and repeat these incessantly. Pleurisy may be<br />

cut short by a vigorous application of cold to the affected<br />

region, as in croup; but when pneumonia has advanced<br />

beyond its first stage, it requires at least six days for its<br />

resolution.<br />

Spitting ofBlood.— Hemorrhage is unpleasant under<br />

all circumstances, and is often a sign of danger ; but, in<br />

most cases, it is not of so much importance as the pa<br />

tient imagines. The nose-bleed is frequent in delicate<br />

and plethoric constitutions, and is brought on by any<br />

excitement. Thoroughly bathing the head and neck,<br />

and snuffing cold water up the nostrils, generally cures<br />

it. In some cases, however, it is checked with great<br />

difficulty.<br />

The saliva is often tinged with blood from the gums,<br />

or a decayed tooth. This may be distinguished from<br />

bleeding from the lungs, or air passages, by there being<br />

no cough. When blood comes with coughing, its<br />

source is below the glottis, or opening into the larynx.<br />

When it comes from the upper part of the pharynx, or<br />

around the fauces, it is merely hawked up. Blood from<br />

the stomach can come up in no way but by eructation<br />

or vomiting, and it is usually dark colored.<br />
