later generations became relatively prosperous, one family member estabUshing an<br />

importing business in America and others gaining degrees in the social sciences and<br />

fine arts. The Vanina clan ~ as descendants would proudly assert ~ had buih a stable<br />

and successful life in Australia through hard work and the strong support of family ties.<br />

That they had won the admiration and respect of their local community was epitomised<br />

in a 1972 decision of the Mount Franklin Shire Council to name a Hepbum street in<br />

their honour. It was also a sign of the emerging permanency of Italian-speaking<br />

settiement — a theme to be pursued in the following chapter.<br />
