For watchmaking purists, a “complication” is any function<br />

besides <strong>the</strong> hours and minutes. For some, even <strong>the</strong> seconds<br />

display is considered a complication, especially if it appears<br />

in an off-centered subdial. But <strong>the</strong> definition of <strong>the</strong> word<br />

“complication” has been a topic of heated debate for many<br />

years now. By way of example, <strong>the</strong> tourbillon is not an<br />

additional function, but is it a complication? A currently<br />

widespread definition considers any device that complicates<br />

<strong>the</strong> basic movement mechanism as a complication. From<br />

this standpoint, <strong>the</strong> “stop seconds” device, digital display<br />

or jumping hours are also considered to be complications,<br />

while often making <strong>the</strong> watch simpler to use.<br />
