How can one enliven a perpetual calendar model?
By choosing a retrograde-type mechanism for one
or several of the calendar indications, with a hand
moving across the arc of a circle before jumping
back to its point of departure (see the Retrograde
Mechanisms and Jumping Hours chapter). Another,
much rarer, option is that of roller-type indications.
This quest for originality paves the way for all
manner of fanciful visual touches calling for a
superlative degree of technical mastery.
1. Jaquet droz, Perpetual Calendar
Jaquet droz, known for its consistently original designs, offers
a perpetual Calendar model with double retrograde display
occupying the entire upper part of the dial, with days on the left
and the date on the right.

The ref. 5159 perpetual calendar with retrograde date from
patek philippe has an “officer’s style” case with a back protected
by a hinged cover.
3. Parmigiani Fleurier, Toric Corrector
equipped with a minute repeater and a pusher enabling instant
correction of all the calendar and moonphase functions, the
Toric Corrector by parmigiani Fleurier displays the retrograde
date on the arc of a circle running from 8 to 4 o’clock.

The ultra-sophisticated Shabaka watch by Jean dunand is
equipped with a minute repeater striking on a cathedral chime,
and is also distinguished by its roller-type display of the perpetual
calendar indications, all of which jump instantly at midnight.
5. maîtres du Temps, Chapter Two
The Chapter Two watch, created by daniel roth, roger
dubuis and peter Speake-Marin for the Maîtres du Temps
brand, displays the months and days spelled out on two
rollers—complete with two correctors housed on the caseback.
6. Piaget, Emperador Coussin Perpetual Calendar
The emperador Coussin perpetual Calendar by piaget, driven
by an ultra-thin in-house movement, features two fan-shaped
retrograde day and date displays. an additional 24-hour dual
time zone display enables the wearer to travel around the world
without disturbing the date indications.
