CHRONOGRAPHS, SPLit-SECONdS ANd FLybACk CHRONOGRAPHS PAtEk PHiLiPPE CHRONOGRAPH – REF. 5170J The Ref. 5170J is a truly classic chronograph. It comes in a yellow-gold case with a diameter of 39mm and possesses the CH 29- 53 PS manufacture chronograph movement. Its case design uses the round Calatrava style with rectangular pushers that evoke Patek Philippe’s coveted vintage chronographs from the 1940s. The new caliber within, a manual-winding two-pusher chronograph movement with column-wheel control and a horizontal clutch, was entirely developed in the brand’s workshops. It incorporates six patented inventions and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph. The silvered white dial bears slim applied hour markers, yellow-gold applied Roman numerals at 12:00 and 6:00, and black transfer-printed scales. • 288 Grand Complications, Vol. VII
PAtEk PHiLiPPE SPLit-SECONdS CHRONOGRAPH – REF. 5950A Launched in 2005, the caliber CHR 27-525 PS split-seconds chronograph movement has just embarked on a new career. Measuring just 5.25mm in thickness, it is the thinnest ever made, and it is still crafted one at a time. The innovative element is its armor of steel, which Patek Philippe has elevated to the status of a precious metal. The cushion-shaped case is water resistant to 30m and the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback features the same camber as the sapphire crystal covering the dial—an appropriately finished frame for the elaborate caliber with its hand-chamfered components. The orchestration of micromechanical art is gracefully complemented on the face of the watch with delicate foliage engraving that adorns the four corners of the dial.
