Since the development of nautical sports in the 1950s, the world’s
seabeds have inspired an impressive range of innovations developed
by watchmakers and engineers. No other field has engendered so many
technological breakthroughs in such a short space of time. Contact with
water challenges the watch industry in a variety of complex ways: the
difficulties involved in guaranteeing water resistance, readability and
resistance to pressure, as well as ensuring that divers’ timepieces are
both functional and secure, have fuelled relentless research that has
resulted in solutions that have proven valuable for the entire sector.
Today’s divers’ watches are indeed considered by both professionals
and many customers as the epitome of sturdiness and reliability.
Even though a majority of them are more regularly subjected to
the chlorine in swimming pools than pressure at great depths, they
are nonetheless enjoying ever-growing success and pushing brands to
ever further extremes.
