The moonphase is doubtless <strong>the</strong> most poetic<br />

of all complications. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> sun, it<br />

has inspired numerous calendar systems and was<br />

already featured on <strong>the</strong> first medieval mechanical<br />

clocks. The moonphase display is currently back in<br />

favor, and is indeed asserting itself as a full-fledged<br />

complication. New moon, first quarter, full moon,<br />

last quarter: <strong>the</strong> displays serve to depict <strong>the</strong><br />

changing faces of <strong>the</strong> heavenly body throughout<br />

its 29.5-day cycle. Like an open window on <strong>the</strong><br />

sky, it reminds us that our time is inextricably<br />

entwined with <strong>the</strong> great natural cycles.<br />
