The moonphase is doubtless the most poetic
of all complications. Together with the sun, it
has inspired numerous calendar systems and was
already featured on the first medieval mechanical
clocks. The moonphase display is currently back in
favor, and is indeed asserting itself as a full-fledged
complication. New moon, first quarter, full moon,
last quarter: the displays serve to depict the
changing faces of the heavenly body throughout
its 29.5-day cycle. Like an open window on the
sky, it reminds us that our time is inextricably
entwined with the great natural cycles.
