the froot. The whole is made so strong as to be almost cannon<br />

ball proof. The two raoges of houses do not joio one another,<br />

but are joined by a piece of fortification made in the form of a<br />

demi circle that can defend two sides of the Fort, on the top of<br />

which they keep sentry all night; the lower parts of that<br />

building serves as a store. A sentinel is likewise kept all day<br />

walking io the Fort.<br />

17th. We remained here all day. The Captain enquired a great<br />

deal of Mr. Heney concerning the Sioux nation and local<br />

circumstances of that country and lower part of the Missouri,<br />

of which they took notes * ................................................... .<br />

18th. Slept at Mr. McKenzie and heard that 16 horses had been<br />

stolen aL the Upper Village by the Assiniboioes.<br />

19th. Arrived at my lodge; the report of so many horses having<br />

been stolen was confirmed, among wllich were 2 belonging to<br />

the Company, and 2 to Lafrance.-People buying horses; bought<br />

a stout mule for which I paid: 1 gun, 1 large axe, I awl, 1<br />

looking glass, I fathom (I) Hudson's Bay red strouds, t fathom<br />

tobacco, 2 flints, 3 strings pipe beads, 300 balls aod powder, :2<br />

knives, 2 wormers, and a little vermilion.<br />

About sixty warriors set off to revenge upon the Assiniboines<br />

for stealing their horses. Took an inventory of the remainiog<br />

goorls here.<br />

20th. Sold an old gun to Turenne to hel)} him to buy a horse; wrote<br />

to l\Ir. Chaboillez, aod the people set off for the Assioiboine<br />

River. Sent 6 pactoos of furs containing 5!15 kitts, 57 wolves, 4<br />

foxes, 7 beaver, 5 bags of corn and a horse. I kept two of the<br />

Company's horses here, being so poor and sore backed that they<br />

were not able to go to the Fort. Made Morrison remain to ta]{8<br />

care of them.<br />
