92 (Robust), with varying levels of DON were collected in eastern North Dakota as part of the 1995-2000 regional crop surveys The samples were micro-malted (150, N=2) and standard quality parameters determined. Plate count (% infected kernels), DON, xylanase, protease and ergosterol were determined as markers of FHB infection. All malting and analytical work for this project was completed in 2001. Statistical analysis of the relationship(s) between the various FHB markers and grain quality is ongoing. Preliminary results indicate, that while significant correlations exist between several quality parameters and FHB markers, they will likely be of limited predictive value. Ongoing work focuses on the characterization of endo-xylanase(s) produced by Fusarium graminearum. REGIONAL BARLEY CROP QUALITY The 2001 survey of the regional barley crop was prepared in cooperation with the American Malting Barley Association. Periodic summaries of the crop quality were made available to AMBA members throughout the harvest of 2001. A total of 275 sixrowed and 21 two-rowed samples were collected in North Dakota and the primary barley producing regions of Minnesota. Protein and kernel plumpness of the 2001 regional sixrowed malting barley crop was slightly improved over that seen in 2000. However, color scores and test weight were comparable to slightly poorer than those observed in 2000 (Table II). Two hundred and ninety-seven samples collected throughout North and South Dakota and Minnesota were tested for DON. The average level of DON observed in six-rowed samples from the 2001 crop (2.6 ppm) was slightly higher than of 2000, but was still lower than the eight year average (Figure 1). Approximately 39% of the regional sixrowed crop tested exhibited less than 0.5 ppm DON, which compares to 25% below 0.5 ppm in 2000 (Figure 2). Table II.
