ADVANCED TESTING PROGRAM - SIX-ROWED SPRING BARLEY The six-rowed malting barley improvement program at Aberdeen includes as a major objective the development of a short-strawed, lodging and shattering resistant, six-rowed malting barley adapted to irrigated production in Idaho and other western states. Eighteen six-rowed barley varieties were tested in replicated trials at Aberdeen and/or Tetonia in 2001 in trials that included about 85 six-rowed barley entries. These barleys included proprietary varieties plus barleys developed by public programs in Idaho, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Canada. Named varieties in these trials included ‘Barbless’, ‘B2601’, ‘Colter’, ‘Drummond’, ‘Foster’, ‘Lacey’, ‘Larker’, ‘Legacy’, ‘Millenium’, ‘MNBrite’, ‘Morex’, ‘Nebula’, ‘Robust’, ‘CDC Sisler’, ‘Sprinter’, ‘Stander’, ‘Stanwax’, and ‘Steptoe’. Cooperative trials involving six-rowed and two-rowed barleys developed at Oregon State University and Washington State University were also grown under irrigation at Aberdeen. Approximately 100 six-rowed barleys were grown under irrigation in nonreplicated trials at Aberdeen in 2001. Agronomic data for six-rowed barley varieties grown in Trial B under irrigation at Aberdeen from 1999 through 2001 are shown in Table 11, while performance on dryland at Tetonia is shown in Table 12. The last three years data for the Mississippi Valley Barley Nursery are shown in Table 13.
19 Six-rowed barley selections of current interest include 92Ab5180 (83Ab5432/85SR40), 93Ab688 (M44/80Ab4952//79Ab10719), 94Ab13449 (Russell/M64), 96Ab10468 (Colter/M64), 97Ab8333 (86Ab4120/Russell), 98Ab12362 (90Ab852/Excel), and 98Ab12905 (88Y315/82Ab519//M64). The selection 92Ab5180 was submitted for AMBA pilot-scale tests of malting and brewing quality for the third year in 2001, while 98Ab12362 was submitted for the first time. The selection 93Ab688 is being proposed for release in Idaho in 2002 as a feed barley under the variety name of ‘Creel’, but the other indicated selections have malting quality characteristics of interest. All of the indicated six-rowed selections have exhibited good to very good agronomic performance in trials to date, e.g., 96Ab10468, 97Ab8333, and 98Ab12362 all had significantly higher yields than the six-rowed malting barley varieties in trial B at Aberdeen (Table 11), while 94Ab13449 and 98Ab12905 did significantly better in two different irrigated trials at Aberdeen in 2000 and 2001 (Table 14). Selections 98Ab12362, 94Ab13449 and 98Ab12905 have been entered in the 2002 AMBA pilot-scale multi-state trials. Table 11.
