124 Baronesse alleles in the 3HL target region, but yields significantly less than Baronesse. This could be explained by the possible presence of other genes in the genome that could negatively interact with the Baronesse yield genes in an epistatic manner. Experiments to determine the amount, location in the genome, and action of these genes are underway. Morex x Steptoe Morex derived lines F13 and A23. These lines are Morex with chr3 (F13) and chr3 and chr5 (A23) fragments from Steptoe. Yield improvement in these lines is being tested by introgression of the Steptoe large seed QTL; crosses made summer 2000. Backcrosses and reselection were conducted in summer 2001. Yield improvement by increasing the head length is in progress. We crossed selected lines with selected lax head lines in summer 2000. Backcrosses and reselection were conducted summer 2001.
