All of these new selections will be evaluated at Aberdeen and possibly on dryland at other Idaho locations. These winter barley head rows include F4 and F5 populations of several two-rowed and six-rowed winter barley crosses. Brown, Jr. and associates (Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO); Xianming Chen (ARS, Pullman, Washington); Patrick M. Hayes (Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon); and Lee F. Jackson (University of California - Davis, Davis, California). NEW CROSSES Nine-six new barley crosses were planted as F1 populations in the field at Aberdeen in 2001. The greenhouse parents include several entries with promising agronomic and malting quality characteristics as well as barley stripe rust resistance. BARLEY QUALITY Quality evaluations in support of the barley breeding and genetics programs at Aberdeen are generously conducted by the USDA-ARS Cereal Crops Research Unit - Madison, Wisconsin, and reported in detail in their publications. SPECIAL PROJECTS NATIONAL SMALL GRAINS COLLECTION BARLEY GERMPLASM EVALUATIONS H.E. Bockelman, C.A. Erickson, and D.M. Wesenberg Agricultural Research Service - USDA National Small Grains Germplasm Research Facility, Aberdeen, Idaho Cooperation University of Idaho The systematic evaluation of barley accessions in the USDA-ARS National Small Grains Collection (NSGC) and other elite germplasm is coordinated by National Small Grains Germplasm Research Facility (NSGGRF) staff at Aberdeen. Cooperative barley evaluations continued for reaction to barley stripe rust; spot and net blotch of barley; Fusarium head blight; and barley stripe mosaic virus, as well as evaluations of betaglucan, protein, and oil content of NSGC barley accessions.
