We currently have a graduate student developing near isogenic lines for a low grain protein QTL identified in a Lewis x Karl recombinant inbred population. Fine mapping of this chromosome region will be an important contribution to the barley community as we focus on identifing the genes conferring low grain protein. A phenotypic and marker assisted selection program is also being innitiated to more fully utilize the grain protein QTL identified in the Lewis x Karl recombinant inbred population for our breeding program. Research on the use of barley as a feed source for rangeland cattle is ongoing in our program. We anticipate this study will lead to a prediction model which can be used for accurately predicting animal performance based on grain quality parameters. <strong>Progress</strong> in SNP marker development has also been made over the last year in our lab. We anticipate the focus of our future research to remain on breeding improved malting varieties with increased agronomic # Yrs Protein (%)

This approach will allow farmers to grow barley which can be sold for malting while not sacrificing yield if malt quality standards are not reached in a given year.
