Enrichment Activities with O<strong>the</strong>r Students<br />

Residential arrangements have received a great deal of attention regarding students’<br />

retention in a college in general (Tin<strong>to</strong>, 1993), and women’s retention in engineering, in<br />

particular. Some of <strong>the</strong> programs geared <strong>to</strong> enhancing <strong>the</strong> persistence of women in<br />

engineering have established living communities for women in science, math, and<br />

engineering, with <strong>the</strong> rationale that women involved in <strong>the</strong>se disciplines can provide a<br />

supportive network for each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> a greater extent than women in o<strong>the</strong>r disciplines<br />

(Hathaway, et. al., 2000; Seymour & Hewitt, 1997). While <strong>Rowan</strong> has no formal program<br />

of <strong>the</strong> kind, many of <strong>the</strong> engineering and o<strong>the</strong>r math and science students do room<br />

<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r. Therefore, ano<strong>the</strong>r aspect of student life at <strong>Rowan</strong> that was explored was<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> students were living with o<strong>the</strong>r students in <strong>the</strong> fields of engineering or related<br />

math and science majors.<br />

When asked about <strong>the</strong>ir living arrangements for <strong>the</strong> academic year, 36.7% of all<br />

engineering students indicated that <strong>the</strong>y were living with o<strong>the</strong>r science, math and<br />

engineering students; 36.7% indicated that <strong>the</strong>y were living with students in o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

disciplines; and 26.6% indicated that <strong>the</strong>y were not living with students (<strong>the</strong> majority of<br />
