where <strong>the</strong>re are gender differences, females tend <strong>to</strong> be more satisfied than males; in<br />

contrast, at <strong>University</strong> of Washing<strong>to</strong>n, it is <strong>the</strong> males who are more likely <strong>to</strong> express<br />

satisfaction with <strong>the</strong> engineering elements than are females. <strong>Rowan</strong> <strong>see</strong>ms <strong>to</strong> have broken<br />

<strong>the</strong> traditional gender gap in satisfaction with <strong>the</strong> undergraduate engineering program.<br />

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS<br />

In summary, comparisons <strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r engineering students shows that <strong>Rowan</strong> women<br />

are more self-confident in <strong>the</strong>ir place in engineering, that <strong>the</strong>y are highly involved in <strong>the</strong><br />

engineering enrichment and help activities, and that <strong>the</strong>y are more satisfied with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

engineering program and its interpersonal climate. The gender gap at <strong>Rowan</strong> in terms of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se aspects is relatively smaller than in o<strong>the</strong>r student populations. It is not surprising,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, that <strong>the</strong> retention of females, without <strong>the</strong>se familiar sources of gender bias,<br />

compares so favorably <strong>to</strong> that of males in this setting.<br />
