labwork daunting, <strong>the</strong> pedagogy unsuited <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir preferences, <strong>the</strong> interpersonal climate<br />

“chilly” (Ginorio; Seymour & Hewitt, 1997; Adelman, 1998; Rosser, 1991). The women<br />

who left engineering at <strong>Rowan</strong>, however, were as satisfied or more with <strong>the</strong> workload in<br />

classes, <strong>the</strong> leavers expressed even more satisfaction with teamwork and clinic than <strong>the</strong><br />

stayers; satisfaction with labwork was not significantly different between leavers and<br />

stayers. The female leavers are as satisfied or more with faculty and peer relationships<br />

than <strong>the</strong> women who stayed in <strong>the</strong> major. Among <strong>the</strong> males <strong>the</strong>re was greater<br />

dissatisfaction among leavers with regard <strong>to</strong> student-faculty relationships, but not with<br />

regard <strong>to</strong> peer relationships.<br />
