Looking at gender differences in retention, <strong>the</strong> average first-year retention rate for<br />

female students (85% for <strong>the</strong> past 5 years) is actually higher than that of male students<br />

(80%). In fact with few exceptions, especially for <strong>the</strong> last 3 cohorts, for every retention<br />

rate given (1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, etc.) women’s retention is <strong>the</strong> same or better than<br />

men’s. The 6-year graduation rate for <strong>the</strong> 1996 cohort is <strong>the</strong> same for men and women,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> 5-year graduation rate for <strong>the</strong> 1997 cohort and <strong>the</strong> 4-year graduation rate for <strong>the</strong><br />

1998 cohort is higher for women than for men (Tables IIF 3 and 4).<br />
