The University of South Carolina, the City of Columbia, the South Carolina Research<br />

Authority (SCRA) and EngenuitySC joined together to form the USC Columbia <strong>Fuel</strong> Cell<br />

Collaborative in 2005. The collaborative has three principal goals:<br />

• Position the Columbia, SC region as a leader in fuel cell innovation;<br />

• Become world-class innovators for the hydrogen and fuel cell economy; and<br />

• Recruit and retain fuel cell scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators to help<br />

make South Carolina a pre-eminent location for the hydrogen and fuel cell<br />

economy.<br />

USC, the City of Columbia and their partners are committed to making Columbia home<br />

to the highest concentration and greatest diversity of fuel cell and other alternative<br />

energy applications in the world. In early 2006, the Collaborative announced the Greater<br />

Columbia <strong>Fuel</strong> Cell Challenge to create and execute a plan for how Columbia can set<br />

the standard for large scale use and implementation of fuel cell applications by<br />

partnering with industry from the entire supply chain around this technology.<br />

Opened in February 2006, the Center for Hydrogen Research is a 60,000 square foot<br />

located on the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) campus. The facility houses<br />

researchers from various academic institutions and industry (including Toyota), as well<br />

as about 50 researchers from SRNL. The facility is managed by the Aiken and Edgefield<br />

Counties Economic Development Partnership and was constructed with $10 million in<br />

funding from Aiken County.<br />
