The goal of California Clean Tech Open is to foster the development of new<br />
entrepreneurs and technologies that answer the growing global demand for resources<br />
with alternative products and services that prevent the destruction of the natural<br />
environment. The competition was initiated by the MIT Club of Northern California with<br />
partners, supporters and advisors from business, academia, non-profits, the city of San<br />
Francisco, the federal government and state government. Winners will be supplied with<br />
cash, office space, legal services, accounting services and public relations services in<br />
order to establish a start-up business to turn innovative ideas into real products and<br />
services.<br />
The overall winner will be drawn from the category winners and will receive a total of<br />
$100,000 cash and a package of business services, including legal and accounting<br />
services, public relations consulting and one year of office space. Each of the category<br />
winners will receive $50,000 cash and a bundle of professional services, including legal<br />
and accounting services, public relations consulting and one year of office space. The<br />
competition categories include: Energy Efficiency, Smart Power, Renewable Energy<br />
(examples include technology that makes fuel cells and solar power applications),<br />
Transportation (such as more efficient batteries, affordable fuel cells or readily available<br />
flexible fuel vehicles) and Water Management.<br />

8. STATE AND LOCALLY-SUPPORTED DEMONSTRATIONS<br />
POWER GENERATION<br />
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico: Four 250-kW <strong>Fuel</strong>Cell Energy Direct <strong>Fuel</strong><br />
Cell® units were installed in March 2005 to supply electric power and heat to brewery.<br />
$1.4 million of funding was provided by California’s SGIP program.<br />
Santa Rita Jail, Dublin: A 1-MW <strong>Fuel</strong>Cell Energy Direct <strong>Fuel</strong> Cell® 1500 MCFC<br />
system, consisting of four 250 kW units, was installed in November 2005 and provides<br />
90% of base load power. California’s SGIP program is providing funding of up to $1.4<br />
million. The project is part of the DoD Climate Change <strong>Fuel</strong> Cell Program.<br />
East Anaheim Policy Department and Community Center, East Anaheim: The UTC<br />
Power 200-kW PAFC installation is a project of Anaheim Public Utilities and provides<br />
37
