Since 1987, Maine has permitted net metering of commercial, industrial and residential
systems up to 100 kW, but subsequently issued new rules for the resources and
technologies defined in the state's electricity restructuring legislation: fuel cells, tidal
power, solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, biomass, and generators fueled by
municipal solid waste in conjunction with recycling.
While the state has not established interconnection standards, various small generator
stakeholders have developed and agreed to less complex small generator
interconnection procedures and a standard interconnection agreement for small
generators (less than 5 MW) in the context of a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
(“FERC”) proceeding.
