6. Gods, Goddesses and Avtars<br />

They who worship Bhairav shall become sprites;<br />

They who worship Sitala shall ride on donkeys and scatter dust­<br />

For myself I take the name of one God;<br />

I would give all other gods in exchange for it.<br />

They who repeat the name of Shiv and worship him,<br />

ShaH ride on an ox and play the drum;<br />

They who worship the great mother Durge,<br />

Shall be born as a women instead of men. (Namdev, Ibid, p. 57)<br />

You waver and know not the supreme God,<br />

Wherefore you worship gods and goddesses. (Kabir Ibid, p. 163)<br />

He hath millions of Shivs and Kailases;<br />

Millions of Durgas shampoo his limbs;<br />

Millions of Brahmas recite the Veds for Him­<br />

If I beg, let me beg only of God;<br />

I have naught to do with any other god. . .<br />

Millions of Indars wait on Him;. . .<br />

And Rams who out-generalled Rawan’s army,<br />

And Krishns who humbled the pride of Duryodhan.<br />

Kabir, call Him Ram who is omnipresent; we must discriminate<br />

in mentioning the two Rams; The one Ram (God) is contained in all<br />

things; the other (Ram Chander) is only contained in one thing, himself.<br />

(Kabir, Ibid, p. 308)<br />

He who forsaking God the diamond yearneth for other gods,<br />

Shall go to hell, verily saith Ravdas.<br />

(Ravdas, Ibid, p. 316)<br />

7. Idolatory and Ceremonialism<br />

One stone is adored,<br />

Another is trodden under foot:<br />

If one is a god, the other is also a god­<br />

Saith Namdev, I worship the true God. (Namdev, Ibid, pp. 44-45)<br />

If God be found by worshipping a stone.<br />

I will worship a mountain; (Kabir, Ibid, p. 140)
