You wear necklaces, put sacrificial marks on your foreheads, carry<br />

two dhotis, and put towels on your heads.<br />

If you knew God’s designs, you would know that yours is verily a vain<br />

They who have strings oa their necks eat men, recite the Muhammadan<br />

prayers,<br />

And use knives to cut men’s throats. Although the Brahmans sound<br />

shells in their houses, And enjoy their viands as they do themselves;<br />

Yet false is their capital and false their dealings. By uttering falsehood<br />

they maintain themselves. Far from them is the abode of bashfulness<br />

and honesty: Nanak, falsehood everywhere prevaileth.<br />

On their foreheads are sacrificial marks; on their waists reddish dhotis;<br />

And in their hands knives; they are the world’s butchers.<br />

The Pandit readeth and then instructeth others,<br />

But knoweth he not that his own House is on fire.<br />

Without such strings the Brahman wandereth astray,<br />

Twisteth strings for the neck, and putteth them on others.<br />

He taketh hire for marrying;<br />

He pulleth out a paper, and showeth the fate of the wedded pair.<br />

Hear and see, ye people, it is strange<br />

That man, while mentally blind, is named wise. (Macauliffe, Vol. i, p. I8)<br />

Even beasts have their merits; for the oil-cake they eat they<br />

give milk, but the Brahmans make no return for the offerings made<br />

them. (Macauliffe, Vol. i, p. 323)<br />

The Qazi telleth lies and eateth filth.<br />

The Brahman taketh life and then batheth.<br />

The ignorant Jogi knoweth not the way of union with God­<br />

The whole three ruin the world. (Macauliffe, Vol. i, p. 338)<br />

5. The Caste<br />

According to the Hindus foul is the ablution of the Chandal, and vain<br />

are his religious ceremonies and decorations.
