Business units 20 FUNDAMENTALS Groupe SEB's mission is to bring new possibilities and functions to life for its consumers and to make the use of its products easier for them. As leader in its industry, it also needs to develop the market potential of small domestic equipment and to make its products stand out thanks to innovation. Innovation at all different levels The Group's solid positions in its various markets rely on a multi-specialist range covering three major product families present in consumers’ daily lives - cookware, kitchen electrics and home and personal care. In each of these product families, the Group enriches its approach and positioning in order to consolidate its leadership. To achieve this, the Group relies on breakthrough innovations, which generate value and allow it to maintain its lead over the competition. This approach also involves promoting and regularly renewing its existing ranges and expanding its field of activity to include new categories. In this way, 2012 saw the successful launch by Tefal of a new range of cookware with a ceramic coating in France and Belgium, thereby developing its sphere of activity and positioning itself as a specialist in various materials and coatings. Similarly, the Group opened up a new channel in linen care and boosted the market with the launch of the cordless Freemove iron. 338 new products and models launched in 2012 An organisation oriented towards innovation The Group has set up a collaborative organisation system in order to support innovation. By bringing together its Strategic Marketing, Research, Development and Design teams, dialogue and exchange is encouraged right from the outset of projects. People work together to combine their expertise in terms of understanding consumers, product usage, technologies and ergonomics and to develop the entire product design cycle from manufacturing to final usage, or even till the end of the product lifecycle. Three Innovation Centres – Intelligent Systems, Energy and New Materials – have also been set up to develop Group-wide expertise that can be applied to all of the Group's requirements. These Research and Development teams constantly monitor new technological developments and they support the Business Units, thereby maintaining a close link with the principles of product usage. In order to supplement its fields of investigation, the Group has identified 5 major issues – the ageing population, connected products, energy, sustainable development and the preservation of health/beauty/well-being. In all areas, the Group has a very dynamic innovation community, which shares information and resources in particular through a collaborative Intranet site entitled "What if". cookeo a high-tech project managed through teamwork Cookeo is a revolutionary intelligent multifunction cooker. It was developed by research teams, who adapted a technology normally used in telecommunications – matrix screens – for use in an electrical appliance. Following an initial trial on an oven, the project then moved on to focus on an electrical pressure cooker. The main technological challenge was to create an effective interface to guide consumers as they make recipes. Another issue was to develop an opening and locking system that could be operated by an ergonomic hand movement. Design was thus a key element in the development of this product. Capitalising on the expertise of internal teams, combined with that of selected suppliers, and using recognised construction techniques, the Group has brought high technology to consumers.
An innovation community comprising more than 1,200 people 21 FUNDAMENTALS Going one step further with Open Innovation Confronted with a very wide field of investigation, which sometimes extends well beyond small domestic equipment, the Group decided several years ago to start using external resources as part of an open innovation approach. Since 2007, there have been more and more collaborative projects, in particular with universities, specialised institutes and private companies. This year, the Group was involved in setting up the Centre for European Nutrition and Health (CENS), which unites top experts in the fields of food and health. In addition, the SEB Alliance investment fund, launched in 2011, has taken on two new initiatives in 2012. It has become involved in Technocom 2, a fund dedicated to financing new digital businesses, and has also provided support for a start-up company, ChefJérôme, which has developed a system for analysing recipes, extracting a shopping list and transferring this list straight to an e-commerce site. In Vietnam, Asia Fan has developed a new motor, which uses 30% less energy whilst maintaining the same performance. Almost 500,000 fans will be fitted with this new motor from 2013 onwards. A similar initiative has begun in Brazil, with a ceiling fan using 35% less energy: Ultimate Eco Energy. This product, sold under the local brand Arno, is also 35% lighter through the use of considerably less iron, steel or even aluminium. An extension of the project to cover a larger range of products is currently under consideration. 127 patents registered in 2012, 100 models , 288 Soleau preliminary patent registrations
