Eco-logistics: Managing the carbon footprint
To improve its carbon footprint for logistics, the Group is mainly
working on load rates and transport methods. In Mexico, for example, imports
are gradually being transferred to a port from which Mexico can be reached
by train rather than by road: In 2012, 50% of logistics flows were managed by
rail, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 42.5%.
Finished products manufactured in China now pass through two consolidation
platforms, which means that larger containers with better load rates can be
used. France encourages the direct supply of customers from factories and by
container from ports (saving CO2 and time).
EffyPACK or just the right packaging
The EffyPACK* indicator allows the calculation of the logistics cost
of a product at a very early stage and the optimisation of how pallets are used
and containers filled by adjusting the packaging dimensions. In 2012, this
became an obligatory stage in the development of new products, being
incorporated into the design phase.

for cookware
"Recycling cookware items - pans, saucepans, casseroles - enables up to
90% of the metals they are made from to be recovered. Yet these days, most
of these items are put in the bin. This is one of the messages covered by the
Natura project, which we carried out with Groupe SEB and E. Leclerc
stores in France. In October and November 2012, customers brought in
their cookware at the end of its lifecycle and received in exchange a voucher
for a product in the Natura range, which is made from recycled aluminium.
We were in charge of collecting the used cookware and sending
it on for reprocessing. This innovative project allowed us to collect almost
50,000 cookware items, which represents considerable savings in terms
of ecology and economics."

Eco-responsible IT systems
The IT Systems Department is also contributing to the effort,
making energy savings of almost €150,000 thanks to the virtualisation of
IT servers; the collection and recycling by Dataserv of more than 2,500 used
IT and telephone devices (some of them are given a second lease of life,
in particular in the form of donations to an association in partnership with the
Groupe SEB Foundation); printing volume in France reduced by a further
4% etc.
